Our Origin Story
Our Mission
At Mako Designs, our mission is simple: to do what companies ought to and prioritize environmental and human (and animal) health. Mako Designs' founder and owner, Lance (above), for nearly a decade has been an air quality specialist preparing hundreds of technical assessments for health risk impacts from exposure to various substances. In 2026, he brought together his technical experience and his love for his animals and woodworking to create Mako Designs to craft furniture that enriches people's lives without sacrificing their indoor air quality. To Lance, furniture should not only be functional, but also beautiful, inspiring, and healthy.
Our Inspiration
Mako Designs is named after Lance’s first cat, Mako, a cantankerous but lovable tuxedo with very strong opinions about furniture. Over the years, Lance has replaced multiple store-bought cat trees that wobbled, shed, and ultimately fell apart. Frustrated by constant repairs, he began designing and building his own.
What started as one custom cat tree quickly became a series of thoughtfully crafted, cat-approved pieces built to last, built to look good, and built with real homes in mind. Mako Designs was born from the simple belief that pet furniture shouldn’t feel disposable. It should feel intentional.
